Luke 2:11 2024 Christmastide Worship and Events Schedule Wednesday, December 18th, 6:30 pm A Festival of Lessons and Carols Service Please join us for an evening of song and praise as we sing classic carols of ages past and enjoy the musical talents of the members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. In this service the cherished music of the Chruch from across the ages as well as the Sacred Scriptures serve to preach the Good News of Jesus' birth to us, His beloved children. Following the Service, you are invited to join us for candlelight fellowship where we will enjoy warm refreshments and charcuterie. Saturday, December 21st, 2 pm Children's Christmas Pageant: A Christmas Tree Farm In “The Christmas Tree Farm” we’ll travel back to the Garden of Eden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, where sin enters God’s perfect world, yet in His grace, God promises to send a Savior who will bring life from the death of sin. Then, we’ll jump forward to the book of Isaiah, where God is again showing grace and promising a Savior to the Israelites. God’s people have time and again turned away from him and toward other gods. By this point, Babylon has taken Israel captive and family trees are in serious jeopardy. The situation is so dire that Jesse’s line isn’t even referred to as a “tree” anymore – it’s a stump; lifeless and hopeless. But God has greater plans for Jesse’s line, and from the lifeless stump grows a green shoot. A sign of life springs from death. That shoot leads us to the traditional evergreen tree and the story of Jesus’ birth as told in Luke 2. While evergreen trees aren’t mentioned in the Christmas story, they do help point us to Jesus. Their shape (pointing heavenward) and their color (always green and full of life) will be focused on in this program. The small shoot that was promised in Isaiah came to full fruition in Jesus, the son of a virgin. God demonstrates life coming in unexpected and miraculous ways in the story of the first Christmas! Tuesday, December 24th, 4 pm or 6:30 pm Christmas Eve Candlelight Service "Joy to the World" Join is as we reflect upon God's Word delivered by the prophet Isaiah; chapter 40 verse ten and eleven. How does it feel to be stuck in a pit jumping frantically with no way out? How does it feel to be stuck in a grave clawing at the walls only to fall back down again and again? We know. Oh God we know! That's why our Savior's arms reach into our pit to pull us up, rescues us and gets us out! And this is why this night we sing: "Joy to the World the Lord is come." Wednesday, December 25th, 9 am Christmas Day Divine Service The Lord has not forsaken us. He has come and sought us out to save us (Is. 62:11–12), so that “being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:7). In Christ Jesus, conceived and born of Mary, “the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared” (Titus 3:4). Now He is lifted up in the Gospel, “a signal over the peoples” (Is. 62:10), that He might call us to rejoice in His salvation. St. Luke emphasizes the signs by which the shepherds once found Him: in Bethlehem, the City of David, “wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12). The same Lord Jesus reveals Himself to us in the sure and certain signs of His Gospel. His Church is a true Bethlehem (House of Bread), for the Son of David, “a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11), feeds us with His body and His blood from the manger of His altar, wrapped in swaddling cloths of bread and wine. Let us ponder these mysteries and, as the shepherds did, go about our vocations “glorifying and praising God” (Luke 2:19–20). Sunday, December 29th, 9 am Divine Service for the Fourth Day of Christmas The Firstborn Son of God Is Our Redemption from Sin and Death. When the Lord destroyed the firstborn sons of Egypt, He spared the sons of Israel by providing a lamb in their stead. Hence, all the firstborn sons belong to Him. Every firstborn male animal was sacrificed, and every firstborn son of man was redeemed (Ex. 13:12–13). Therefore, the parents of Jesus “brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord” (Luke 2:22). However, He is not redeemed from priestly service but is consecrated for “the redemption of Jerusalem” and “the consolation of Israel” (Luke 2:25, 38). For God the Father did not spare His only begotten Son, but offered Him up as the true Passover Lamb, in order to redeem His people from bondage. His cross has caused many to stumble and fall, but His blood atoned for the sins of the world and delivers us from death. We now depart in the peace of Christ because we are also raised with Him. As we receive His body and blood, we join Simeon and Anna in “giving thanks to God the Father through him,” “singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,” including the Nunc Dimittis, with thankfulness in our hearts (Luke 2:28–32, 38; Col. 3:15–17).
